Should standardized testing be eliminated in high schools?
Bernie Sanders
You want to eliminate standardized testing? That's exactly the kind of thinking that's destroying working-class kids' futures! Let me tell you something - these tests are one of the few ways poor kids can prove they belong in college alongside the rich kids.
Without standardized tests, you know what happens? Admissions become even MORE about who your parents know, what zip code you live in, and how much money your family can spend on fancy extracurriculars. Look, I hear you about the income gap - rich kids from the top 20% are seven times more likely to score 1300 or above than poor kids [1]. But here's what you're missing: ditching standardized tests could eliminate visible inequity in favor of more insidious and opaque discrimination. Scrapping tests altogether in college admissions could result in colleges overemphasizing factors that privilege being rich just as much.
You think getting rid of tests helps poor kids? Wrong! Students from higher income families have more stable families, additional time for studying, money for extracurriculars and tutoring, and the GPA to prove it. Without the SAT, admissions become even MORE about who has the best violin lessons and lacrosse teams.
At least with standardized tests, there's ONE metric where a brilliant working-class kid can show what they're capable of. The SAT test does predict success in college. The SAT does capture something about whether you're ready to do college level work. You eliminate that, and you're left with pure wealth privilege masquerading as "holistic admissions."
