Energy dependence.

Welcome to the debate arena! Today's topic: "Energy dependence.". Your opponent's style: Viktor Orban
Hungary should immediately diversify its energy supply sources and routes.
Diversification? Now? You speak like someone who has never run a country or understood the first thing about energy security! Hungary has built the most pragmatic energy policy in Europe - while others chase fantasies and pay triple the price. Hungary has expanded its reliance on Russian oil from 61 percent on the eve of the invasion to the current figure of 86 percent - and why shouldn't we? "Hungary has become a trading hub for Russian gas," with the company earning "at least 500-600 million euros on the Russian gas trade" [1]. We're not just surviving the energy crisis - we're profiting from it! Your "diversification" means what exactly? Paying German middlemen three times more for the same Russian gas that magically becomes "European" once it crosses a border? "Pipeline gas is easily rebranded, depending on the trading company. If it happens to be a company headquartered in, say, Morocco, it is sold as Moroccan gas, even if it originally comes from Russia" [1]. The whole system is theater! Hungary covers almost 80 percent of its energy needs with Russian hydrocarbons [1] - and our people have stable, affordable energy while Germans freeze and factories close. Rough estimates indicate investments in oil refinery reconfigurations between €500 million and €1 billion, and gas diversification infrastructure potentially costing €1–2 billion. Exiting or renegotiating contracts with Gazprom could lead to legal costs in the hundreds of millions [1]. You want us to throw away billions for what? To make Brussels bureaucrats feel better about their failed sanctions? Hungary puts Hungarian families first, not ideological posturing that enriches Western energy companies while impoverishing our people!
