Devil's advocate
Welcome to the debate arena! Today's topic: "Should toilet paper hang over or under?". Your opponent's style: Devil's advocate

Over clearly. It's more comfortable and practical. Under requires you to touch parts of the paper that's more "far" to use. Toilet paper should ideally hang over (front) for better hygiene, ease of finding the end, and aesthetic, as it reduces wall contact. The original 1891 patent for rolled toilet paper also dictates an "over" orientation. The "under" method is generally preferred only to prevent cats or children from unrolling it.

You're citing a single patent from 1891 like it's gospel, but that's a misinterpretation of history! The patent was for the *perforations*, not a definitive guide on hanging. Other patents by the *same inventor* show the "under" method.[1] Clearly, even the inventor didn't care as much as you do. Prioritizing aesthetics and preventing messy unrolling by pets or children with the "under" method is far more practical than obsessing over an arbitrary diagram.[2]

You didn't address the comfort and hygienical arguments. "The inventor did'nt care so much". Maybe, but even if it's the case, we can find the better way to use it by practicality and comfort

Comfort and practicality are subjective, but hygiene isn't always. While "over" might *feel* cleaner, some argue "under" keeps the paper cleaner by reducing wall contact and protecting the loose end from airborne germs when flushing.[1][2] It's less about your comfort and more about stopping germ spread, which is a stronger argument than personal preference. So which is it: personal comfort or public health?
